The amount of energy and associated emissions from agriculture required to create your food vary based on personal food choices and dietary restrictions.
The carbon calculator makes assumptions about food consumption based on gender. We recognize that these assumptions are not perfect, but they allow for a calculation to be done on the emissions created during agricultural processes and transport of food.
Use a blended average based on a general number of people who reside in your home. If your home is inconsistent pick one home to focus on.
Homes use energy for heat and the emissions associated with a home are divided by the number of people in a home. For example, if a single detached home produces 10 tonnes of CO2 and 5 people reside in it, the amount attributed to a single person would be 2 tonnes of CO2.
The size of a home determines how much heat and electricity that home uses. A smaller condo is typically more efficient and consumes less energy than a large detached home.
Each province has a blend of electricity generation types that feed into the electric grid. All grids require reliable consistent baseload power like hydro, natural gas, and goal. Decisions about electricity blends, distribution, and transmission happen at the provincial level.
Electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, and wood are all energy sources that are used to heat homes across Canada. Unfortunately, at this time, we only have electricity and natural gas data for the calculator. If you use fuel oil or wood, you can leave this option empty.
Travel destinations often require a layover in cities along the way which changes the carbon footprint. The ENERGYminute carbon calculator builds layover emissions into the total calculation. For example, if you were flying from Ottawa to Whitehorse your emissions would be XX, but if you have a layover in Calgary our profile would change to XX.
Our waste can be reduced by recycling, composting, and being aware of high impact items - like batteries contained within electronics.
