What happens with each degree of global warming?

Research on the effects of climate change has been advanced by many prominent scientific organizations, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, NASA, academics, and more.

Understanding the impacts of each degree of warming helps us better understand how to cope and what to avoid.

Climate science goes back a long ways

The history of climate change research dates back to the 19th century when scientists first started studying the Earth’s atmosphere and temperature patterns.

  • In the late 1800s, Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius first proposed the idea that changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels could result in global warming.
  • In the mid-20th century, the advent of reliable temperature records and improved computer models led to an increased understanding of the role of greenhouse gases in regulating the Earth’s temperature.
  • In the 1980s and 1990s, there was a growing body of evidence indicating that human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, were significantly increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, leading to global warming.
  • Today, climate change research continues to evolve as scientists work to better understand the Earth’s climate system and predict future changes.
